In Memoriam: Presidents Waxberg and Schatz

It is with great sadness that we memorialize two Past International Presidents of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity who have passed in 2023. Brother Philip M. Waxberg, Alpha (City College  of New York) 1966, served from 2008-2010. Brother Frederick E. Schatz, Eta of Phi Sigma Delta (University of Michigan) 1957, served from 1988-1990.

Philip M. Waxberg

Philip M. Waxberg, Alpha (City College  of New York) 1966, retired from Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity and Zeta Beta Tau Foundation as Chief Financial Officer in 2007. He went on to serve as International President of the Fraternity from 2008-2010.

Brother Waxberg was a proud alumnus of the Alpha Chapter at the City College of New York.  Following his graduation from CCNY, he served the Fraternity and the Foundation in a number of volunteer capacities. From 1989 to 2007, he served as the Fraternity and Foundation’s Chief Financial Officer. After his retirement, he continued to give back to Zeta Beta Tau, being elected International President for the 2008 to 2010 biennium.

His dedication to the Fraternity and to its brothers was unparalleled. He knew and helped every chapter treasurer in his years on staff. His care and concern for all brothers was obvious to those who knew him. He was often a voice of reason, particularly on complex financial matters, and his counsel was sought by many. A gifted singer, he loved to lead the singing of Here’s To Our Fraternity at International Convention.

Brother Waxberg was preceded in death by his wife, Lynn. Their two children, Rachel and Brother David A. Waxberg, Beta Epsilon (Michigan State University) 2003, were at his side when he passed.

Brother Waxberg died on Shabbat, a sign of righteousness and goodness. May his memory be a blessing. We mourn the loss of this true, loyal and distinguished brother. Please take a moment to remember Brother Waxberg, one of Zeta Beta Tau’s important leaders.

Funeral services were in February in Paramus.

Frederick E. Schatz, Eta of Phi Sigma Delta (University of Michigan) 1957, age 87, passed away Thursday, April 6, in Boynton Beach, Florida. He is survived by his beloved wife, Enid Schatz. Brother Schatz was a long-time Michigan resident, based in the Detroit suburbs, working in the finance industry. He was a devoted Michigan Wolverines fan.

He served on the Supreme Council for almost 15 years before being elected to the Fraternity’s top leadership position. He also was executive trustee of the Eta Chapter at Michigan for many years. His son, Brother Richard (Rick) E. Schatz, 1989, was Eta Chapter President in 1988.
