Jerry Kirshenbaum, 1960, has published Miami Road: A Son’s Memoir, detailing his family’s life on Chicago’s once heavily Jewish West Side and in his hometown of Benton Harbor, Michigan. The book also touches on his Northwestern years. Jerry was a feature writer and columnist at the Minneapolis Tribune, a staff writer in the nation and business sections at Time and for 30 years a writer and editor at Sports Illustrated, retiring as the magazine’s assistant managing editor. In 2022 he came out of retirement to write a 50th anniversary reminiscence for Sports Illustrated of his close relationship with Mark Spitz at the 1972 Munich Olympics, at which Spitz’s swimming heroics were eclipsed by the terrorist attack that resulted in the deaths of 11 Israeli athletes and coaches. An inductee in Northwestern’s Medill Journalism School Hall of Achievement, Jerry lives in New York City and Stockbridge, Massachusetts, with his wife Susan, an Emmy-winning television writer. Michael Korda, best-selling New York Times author and former editor-in-chief of Simon & Schuster, says of Miami Road: “I enjoyed this book enormously. Written with a remarkable combination of frankness and love. A family story well told.”

Alpha Xi (Washington University – St. Louis)
Mandel (Mandy) C. Selber, Jr., 1951, shared his memories from four outstanding and wonderful years as an active member of ZBT:
I never had a bad day and loved every day of my fraternity life. I pledged at Alpha Xi Chapter at Washington University in St Louis in 1947. I transferred to the Psi Chapter at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and graduated in 1951.
I am from Shreveport, Louisiana, but I moved to Houston three years ago as all my children, four grandchildren and six great-grands live here.
We had a large chapter at Alpha Xi with at least 60 members, maybe, 80. However, there were only 22 out-of-town fellows who lived in the ZBT Fraternity house and those are the guys that I saw on an everyday basis.
Only Burton Resnic is still around. Buddy received his law degree from Harvard and practiced law until he was 92 years old. He is 97 now and lives in Boca Raton, Florida. He is originally from Holyoke, Massachusetts. I stayed in touch with Buddy on a regular basis but he has not responded in six months so I don’t know what his status is now.
The six or eight St. Louis guys that I was most friendly with are all gone. That would include Howard and Tilford Hearsh, Bobby Wolf, Sandy Ungar and Ed Zerman. I had 40 to 45 fraternity brothers in Tuscaloosa and I am only aware of Jack Held, Bernard Lobel and possibly Ted Pailet, who may be still around. I am not sure about Ted as he never responded to a letter about a year ago. Ted was from New Orleans but lived in Nashville before moving to Florida four or five years ago.
I lost my beautiful wife, Rae Rita Kreisman Selber, almost 20 years ago. Rae was from Montgomery, Alabama, and we met at the University.
