Two fraternity volunteers and past professional staff members recently entered Chapter Eternal and completed their journey to the City of Light. May their memories be a blessing.

Douglas L. Maine, Alpha Beta (Temple University) 1970

Brother Maine was a two-term (1969-1970) President of Alpha Beta Chapter at Temple University.

After serving on the ZBT professional staff for eight years, he went on to receive his MBA from Hofstra University. Brother Maine had a 20-year career with MCI (now part of Verizon) where he was Chief Financial Officer from 1992 to 1998 and then joined IBM in 1998 as Chief Financial Officer. Following retirement from IBM, Brother Maine joined Wall Street firm Brown Brothers Harriman.

Brother Maine had been active as a volunteer with ZBT for most of his life. He served on the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation Board of Directors from 1992 to 1995 and again from 1997 to 2000. He was a director on the Supreme Council from 1992 to 1996. Later, he served as a member of the Zeta Beta Tau Foundation’s Corporate Governance Committee and several other Fraternity committees.

His most rewarding role was as the Chapter Advisor to Delta Chapter at Columbia University, according to a 2011 The Digital Deltan article. In addition, he hosted ZBT’s Wall Street Day for undergraduates and young alumni for many years.

In 2014, Brother Maine earned the Stephen P. Ehrlich Award, presented to those alumni who make significant contributions to the operations of the International Fraternity and those who give of themselves to make ZBT a better fraternity. In 2017, ZBT’s annual recognition for most outstanding Chapter President was re-named in his honor, and is now celebrated as the Maine Heffer Award.

David G. Palmquist, Gamma Rho (Eastern New Mexico University) 1969

David was the Gamma Rho Chapter President at the time of its Chartering. Following graduation, Brother Palmquist was a ZBT Field Secretary in 1969-1970, visiting many chapters in his time on staff.

He served one tour in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. Over his life, he traveled the world as an air freight operations executive for Flying Tigers Airlines, FedEx, and Evergreen International Airlines. In later years he was based in the Seattle area.

Brother Palmquist was well-known in ZBT, involved with many international and chapter brotherhood events, including speaking at the 2018 International Convention in Los Angeles.
